Delhi HC awards compensation of Rs 10 lakh to school boy who died after falling in a pit that was left open

The Delhi High Court on Friday (August 3) awarded a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the mother of the 11-year-old boy who had died after falling in a pit that was left open at Millennium Park, South Delhi while he was on the school picnic.

The bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar further ordered that compensation should be disbursed along with interest (9 percent per annum) from the date of death of a boy within four weeks.

The bench gave the verdict in which it had taken suo motu cognizance of the incident in which a 11-year-old boy had died due to falling in a pit that was left open at Millennium Park, South Delhi while he was on the school picnic.

The bench further passed a slew of directions to the various government bodies such as Delhi government, Delhi Cantonment Board (DCB), Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Public Works Department (PWD), CPWD, New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), SDMC, EDMC, North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) and various electricity companies.

The directions are:

  • Sites of all main holes shall be regularly maintained.
  • Protocol of inspections shall be drawn up by all the authorities.
  • Access to the public to the sites should be restricted.
  • Sign board should be in place at every work place.
  • In case of any mishappening it shall be the responsibility of the senior officer, same will be held liable.
