Delhi HC grants police protection to Muslim couple, who married against wishes of bride’s family

The plea further said that after knowing about the petitioners' marriage, her father and brother have issued threats to the petitioners' life and are regularly approaching local police to get the man arrested.

The Delhi High Court has granted police protection to a Muslim couple, who married against the wishes of the family members of the woman and directed Delhi Police to file status report.

A Vacation Bench of Single-Judge Justice Jasmeet Singh directed the Delhi Government and the concerned Station House Officer (SHO) to ensure that the life and liberty of the couple is adequately protected. Accordingly, the Bench directed the couple to give their residential address to the concerned SHO.

The petition has been filed by a man and his wife seeking necessary and adequate protection and safety from the father and brother of his wife. The plea averred that the petitioners, who are both major and belong to the same community, got married on June 21, 2021, according to Muslim rites and customs, against the wishes of the woman’s family.

The plea further said that after knowing about the petitioners’ marriage, her father and brother have issued threats to the petitioners’ life and are regularly approaching local police to get the man arrested.

In light of the above, the plea sought the court to restrain the father and brother of the woman for the undue interference and disturbance cause in the peaceful and happy married life of the petitioners, and to direct them not to harass, humiliate and torture the petitioners and not to extend any further threats to life.
