Delhi HC Issues Notice On Plea Seeking Welfare Scheme For Orphans

The Delhi High Court on Friday issued notice on a plea seeking a scheme for welfare, education, living and other prospects for orphans in need where there are no government policies to assist the orphans amid COVID 19 Pandemic.

A bench comprising Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan was hearing a plea filed by a social worker Harpal Singh Rana through Advocate Akhil Rana seeking information through the Right to Information Act for the welfare schemes introduced by the Government for the education and living arrangements of orphan children.

The petitioner also made a reference to few cases where children whose parents passed away were living with their grandparents and were dependent on them. One of such cases referred  by the petitioner was of an orphan a child who had 6 siblings had applied to the Social welfare Department which conveyed to him that the department only provides old age pension, disability pension and financial assistance  under the Delhi family Benefit scheme.

The bench has issued notice to the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Delhi government and its Department of Social Welfare and sought their response.

The matter has been listed for next hearing on July 2.
