The Gauhati High Court has recently observed that all such Government servants including policemen, who have to work in harm’s way as part of their duty, must be given quality equipment for their safety.
The Division Bench of Chief Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Soumitra Saikia disposed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by one Dulal Bora taking a plea that the light bullet proof jackets being given to policemen in Assam are of a poor quality.
The petitioner has also annexed with the petition the Guidelines of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, where the requirements of testing these jackets are provided.
While considering the PIL, the High Court was of the opinion that all such Government servants including policemen, who have to work in the harm’s way as a part of their duty, must be given quality equipments for their safety.

The Bench, however, did not think it a proper case to be gone into in detail by the Court as it does not have expertise in this matter.
Therefore, the Court disposed of the petition with liberty to the petitioner to persuade the appropriate authority of the Assam Government for redressal of his grievance.
