Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel who retired from Supreme Court today defended his judgment (he was part of the bench) in the SC/ST Act saying that there was a provision in the Act that you will not get anticipatory bail. “Can any innocent person be arrested? If this is so, what is the need of courts? That’s why we gave directions,” he said at a farewell function organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association.

Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel was elevated to Supreme Court on July 7, 2014. Before Supreme Court, Justice Goel served as Chief Justice of the Orissa HC and prior to that he was the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court.

Born on July 7, 1953, Justice Goel has also held the position of Executive Chairman, Haryana State Legal Services Authority.

On his farewell, CJI Dipak Misra said: “I know Justice Goel since 2005. He has the passion for ideas. He is a man of simplicity, man of conviction.”

Justice Goel said that he enjoyed his entire 44 years of service in law. “The bar and bench complement each other and help each other. This is the most charming profession. Never compromise with partiality.”

Vikas Singh, President, Supreme Court Bar Association, said: “Judicial reform is the need of the hour. Justice Goel was always in favour of judicial reforms.”

With the retirement of Justice Goel, the judges tally goes to 22. It is to be noted that recently a new bench was constituted comprising Justices Rohington Nariman and Indu Malhotra, both of them promoted from the bar.
