On 14th September 1949, Hindi was adopted as an official language of the Republic of India by the Constituent Assembly, and the decision was ratified by the Constitution of India when it came to effect on 26th January 1950. Hindi in Devanagari script was adopted as an official language under Article 343 of the Indian Constitution.

In June this year, Supreme Court had heard a plea filed against the mandatory imposition of Hindi language in Courts of Haryana. A three- judge Bench led by the Chief Justice SA Bobde, Justice AS Bopanna and Justice Hrishikesh Roy had directed petitioners to approach the Punjab & Haryana High Court.

The plea had challenged the Haryana Official Language (Amendment) Act, 2020 which made Hindi the official language of Courts in Haryana. The amendment was made to Section 3A of the Haryana Official Languages Act, 1969, designating Hindi as the sole official language to be used for conducting work in both the civil and criminal courts in Haryana.
