On Whose Opinion Lockdown Relaxed: Cal HC Seeks Response From Centre & State Govt

The High Court of Calcutta has directed the Centre and the State Government to file a report providing the details as to whose opinion was sought before relaxing the guidelines for COVID 19 lockdown.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Thottathil B Radhakrishnan was hearing a petition filed by Advocate Anindya Sundar Das seeking necessary steps to ensure that markets, offices and other establishments in the state function under the watch of the Police.

The petitioner has contended that the Government has put the lives of the general public at stake by relaxing the guidelines. The petitioner has also alleged that no surveillance has been observed in the many district of the State.

The petitioner has also prayed that the migrants who have returned to the state to be kept under strict surveillance of the Police since there has been an increase in the number of COVID 19 cases in the state due to the migrants.

The petitioner has further alleged failure on the part of the State Government to implement the lockdown due to which people have not been following the social distancing norms.

The bench has directed the Central and State Governments to file their affidavits by June 11.
