Raj HC Says Keeping Cows For Personal Use Of Milk Is An Old Tradition In India, No Coercive Action Can Be Taken For The Same

The High Court of Rajasthan has said that “Keeping of cow for personal use of milk has been an old traditional way of life in India and no person can be deprived or denied to follow this old tradition.”

A Single-Judge bench of Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma was hearing a petition filed by Radheshyam against the Jaipur Nagar Nigam and other, alleging his electricity and water connections were cut down by treating him as dairy farmer and Gaushala owner, as he was keeping cow at his residence for his personal use.

The bench observed that if any citizen keeps a cow or buffalo or any other pet in his house for his personal use, it cannot be a ground to disconnect the electricity and water connection of his residence. Further keeping of one or two cows at home does not amount to having cattle farm within the meaning of ‘Gaushala’.

Therefore, the bench issuing notice to the respondents directed Jaipur Nagar Nigam to reconnect the electricity and water connection of the petitioner.
