Schools insisting on full fees: Madras HC warns of contempt proceedings

New Delhi: Reacting to reports of alleged rampant profiteering amid the COVID disaster by some schools, the Madras High Court has sent a warning of contempt proceedings to schools insisting on full payment of fees. This action of the schools goes against the court’s July 17 order that said payment of fees will be in instalments.

The court has not stopped at the warning. It has directed the state to enquire and act upon errant schools.

The warning and direction of action came when the state informed Justice N Anand Venkatesh of the court that several complaints had come in from parents that some schools were insisting on payment of full fees.

The court had said on July 17 that schools can ask for 40 percent of the tuition fees while schools remain closed. This amount was payable by August 31. Also, 35% of the fee could be collected two months after schools physically reopened and the pandemic situation had improved.
