Telangana HC Notice Government On Plea To Stop ‘Illegal Transportation & Slaughtering’ Of Camels

The Telangana High Court has issued notice to Government and GHMC in a petition seeking directions to stop alleged ‘illegal transportation of camels from Rajasthan to Telangana’ for slaughtering.

A bench comprising of the Chief Justice Raghvendra Singh Chauhan and Justice Vijayasen Reddy directed the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to ensure that no camel slaughtered in the state.

The Court was hearing the petition filed by Shashikal Kopanati associated with Earth Quotient, an organization working for the welfare of animals and environment.

While issuing notices to the Union Public Health Department, State Animal husbandry Departments and Police authorities the bench observed that the population of the camels was dwindling in the state of Rajasthan and most of them were being smuggled to Hyderabad.

The petitioner describing the plight of the camels submitted that “making them walk for hundreds of kilometers or bringing them here packed like sardines in cramped vehicle and slaughtering them is punishable under the Prevention of Cruelty To Animals Act of 1960”.

The petitioner further submitted that the state of Rajasthan expressly prohibits taking camels out of Rajasthan and hence, it is an illegal act.

The Counsel appearing for the State Government ensured the Court that steps will be taken to prevent cruelty to camels in the state.
