Lowering age limit for DGP appointment not in interest of police service:Supreme Court

The Supreme Court said that observed a court order which would lower the age limit for the appointment of State Director General of Police (DGP) would not be a great idea in terms of the police service.

The Apex Court said that such effect would make officers junior by five years appointed as DGP.

The Court observed that it cannot be unmindful of the fact that a judicial order to relax age of 30 years to 25 years ,will eventually lead to a situation where officers who are junior by 5 years will be appointed as DGP and it will not be in interest of police service.

The bench told that it would be the decision of the UPSC and the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for deciding whether any age relaxation should be introduced in the future.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, Justice V Ramasubramanian and Justice JB Pardiwala made the observation while instructing  the state government of Nagaland to issue appointment orders in line with the empanelment list prepared by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

The order by the Court read directions to the State of Nagaland for passing orders to implement the above direction and appoint the officer who has been empaneled by UPSC for Nagaland appointment.

As per the order of the court, the appointment of Rupin Sharma as DGP of Nagaland would stand confirmed.
