SC issues notice to Centre on petition seeking censorship of online content

The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Centre to file a response in a petition seeking regulations to control the contents of broadcasts made by online platforms such as Amazon Prime Video and Netflix.

A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Sanjiv Khanna in the case of Justice for Rights Foundation v Union of India issued a notice in reference to the claim of a NGO about the absence of guidelines to regulate the contents on these online platforms. It has been claimed that the contents are unregulated, uncertified, sexually explicit, vulgar, inappropriate, religiously forbidden” and “legally restricted.” Some of their shows often “depict women in objectifying manner”.

The NGO has prayed for a writ of mandamus to bring guidelines in place that can check online content which shows women in poor light and other unfettered objectionable depictions that viewers stream constantly.

If the guidelines are framed, online platforms will also have to restrict existing content.
