SC refuses to interfere in the PIL seeking FIR registration against perpetrators named in MeToo campaign

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to interfere in the PIL seeking registration of FIRs against whom sexual harassment charges have been leveled in the MeToo campaign.

The bench comprising CJI Ranjan Gogoi and Justices S K Kaul, K M Joseph told the petitioner “if there is a cognizable offence which is not being registered then there are other appropriate remedies in criminal law, why Article 32 should be invoked?”

“Issue direction to the respondent no.2 (MHA) to set up fast-track trial courts for conducting trial of the all sexual harassment cases to provide justice in time-bound manner in the interest of justice,” the plea said.

Earlier, the court had refused to accord urgent hearing of the plea.
