Supreme Court Collegium approves elevation of 3 advocates, 2 judicial officers as judges of Gauhati High Court

The Supreme Court Collegium in its meeting held on September 1 has approved the proposal for elevation of advocates namely Kakheto Sema, Devashis Baruah, and Arun Dev Choudhury as judges in the Gauhati High Court. 

Further, the Collegium has recommended judicial officers Malasri Nandi, and Marli Vankung as judges in the Gauhati High Court. The Gauhati High Court has a sanctioned strength of 24 judges (18 permanent judges and 6 additional judges) including Kohima, Aizwal, Itanagar benches.

According to the list of judges by the Department of Justice, as on September 1, 2021, there are currently 16 sitting judges (permanent) and 4 additional judges at Gauhati High Court. After the approval of recommended strength, the Gauhati High Court will have 25 sitting judges.
