SC refuses to interfere in Madras HC order curbing powers of Puducherry Lt Governor

The apex court on Friday refused to interfere with the Madras High Court order that stated that the Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi “cannot interfere with the activities of the elected government” in the state.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi was hearing a plea filed by Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi seeking clearness on the administrative control of the Union Territory and claiming that High Court had overlooked the Union Territories Act’s provisions on separation of powers.

“The high court has equated the L-G of Puducherry to the L-G of NCT of Delhi, despite the fact that the former enjoys greater discretionary powers and has a special responsibility towards Puducherry,” the plea filed by Bedi in the apex court said.

Disposing of the plea, the apex court told Bedi to approach division bench of High Court.

Bedi and Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanaswamy are fighting on administrative issues ever since Bedi assumed office in 2016. In the wake of the constant turf war over administrative control, Bedi moved Madras High Court seeking clearness on control of bureaucrats in Puducherry.
