In A Confidential Letter, Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia Writes Strongly to CBDT Chairman About Laxity Shown in Collection of Taxes

In a confidential letter obtained by India Legal, it is clear that Indian Govt. is concerned and mightily worried about low tax collection; and in coming days, the tax collection can be monitored day to day to improve the condition.

This letter was written by Dr. Hasmukh Adhia, Revenue Secretary, and was addressed to Mr. Atulesh Jindal, who is the Chairman of Central Board of Direct Taxes. Coming straight to the point, the letter starts with this line: “I’am writing to you out of disappointment on the laxity shown by our field officers in collection of taxes..”

Suggesting ways to increase collection of tax, Dr. Adhia shares that day to day supervision and constant communication with CCITs and Commissioners is very important for achieving targets.

In the end, Dr. Adhia tells: “As Chairman (CBDT), you must show your leadership and see to it that RE targets are achieved fully.”

It would be interesting to observe how CBDT Chairman responds to these suggestions; and how Govt. will ensure that tax is optimally collected.
