Criminal to waste water for IPL pitches when there is severe crisis: Bombay HC

Making a sharp observation, the Bombay High Court today said it was “criminal waste” of water to keep pitches green during IPL, while hearing a PIL filed today to direct the Board Of Control For Cricket In India (BCCI) not to waste water during the championship.

The court, meanwhile, reserved its order on interim relief to BCCI for Thursday.

The PIL urged the court to restrain BCCI from using BMC water to maintain pitches during IPL, arguing that many districts in Maharashtra are reeling under severe water crisis, and water is wasted indiscriminately during matches.

As many as 20 matches will be played in Mumbai, Nagpur and Pune alone, 40 lakh liter water will be used for ground, sanitation etc. The BCCI, meanwhile, told the court that they use tanker water on which the cricket body was questioned by the court about the source of this water.
