All India Human Rights & Social Justice Front (AIHRSJ) has filed a petition in Supreme Court, regarding return of Koh-i-Noor diamond from United Kingdom to India. The petition was filed against The High Commission of UK and others.

Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar gave a brief history of the diamond, and said that the diamond was given to East India Company as a compensation for Sikh riots; and later it was given to the Queen as gift. He argued that since the diamond was not stolen, it cannot be recovered back.

Petitioner argued that historians will not pardon SG Ranjit Kumar for sharing such false facts.

After getting Independence in 1974, Indian Govt. has pursued the return of Koh-i-Noor; and in 1953, after coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, request was again sent for the return. But Britain refused the request every time, stating that the ownership of Koh-i-Noor was non-negotiable.

In 2010, David Cameron, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom visited India and when asked of Koh-i-Noor diamond, he said, “If you say yes to one you suddenly find the British Museum would be empty. I am afraid to say, it is going to have to stay put”

The Bench, headed by Justice Uday Kumar Lalit has now granted the petitioner 6 weeks to get proper instructions, check the facts and then file affidavit regarding this case.
