The Supreme Court today put a stay on proceedings against Supriya Prasad by Uttar Pradesh Assembly in the Muzaffarnagar riots’ sting video matter. The court also granted four weeks’ time to the state to file a counter reply.

During the proceedings, senior advocate Gaurav Bhatia who was appearing on behalf of the state government submitted that Prasad did not submit raw footage to the committee. India Today had reportedly run a sting operation video against a senior MLA in UP assembly during Muzaffarnagar riots.

Bhatia also said that the committee recorded the statement for 15 days, and some of those who gave their statements also admitted that there was no evidence against the MLA.

The bench of Justice Khehar and Nagappa then asked the counsel if the house can send Prasad to jail?

On his argument that jurisdiction of this is limited, Justice Khehar countered him saying “limited jurisdiction is very wide”.
