SC junks PIL against 4G licences to Reliance Jio

The Supreme Court today dismissed a Public Interest Litigation(PIL) filed by an NGO, Centre for Public Interest Litigation(CPIL) against allocation of 4G spectrum to Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited.

While the bench of Justices AK Sikri and RK Agarwal did not pass any orders on it, it directed the government to take appropriate steps and look into the matter of spectrum usage charge(SUC).

The PIL, which was filed by senior advocate Prashant Bhushan in 2014, had alleged irregularities in acquiring the 4G spectrum by Reliance, citing a report by the Comptroller General of India. The PIL also claimed that the spectrum was meant only for data, and not voice.
