The Supreme Court on Monday (April 9) rebuked the Central government for not following its order to constitute the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) and its implementation within six weeks.

The bench headed by CJI Dipak Misra said to Attorney General (AG) K K Venugopal that the Central government must show its bonafide intention that it want to follow the order and implement the scheme.

The apex court was hearing the plea filed by the State of Tamil Nadu seeking to initiate contempt proceedings against the Centre for not constituting the CMB within the stipulated period of six weeks.

The bench directed the filing of the draft scheme pertaining to CMB before it. “We will see the purport of the scheme and within 1 month of its draft submission, it shall be finalized. You must release the water as per our directions.”

“The scheme should be submitted before the court on May 3, 2018 and both the parties will see it and discuss it,” the bench said and added “Supreme Court has always looked into the problems faced by the people of this country. This matter is now before the Supreme Court and the people of the respective states must co-operate and maintain peace”.
