15 days ordinary leave to life convict in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case

The Madurai bench of Madras High Court granted a 15 days ordinary leave to Ravichandran, one of the seven life convicts in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

A bench including Justices T. Raja and B. Pugalendhi heard a plea for leave filed by Ravichandran’s mother, P Rajeswari of Aruppukottai taluk in Virudhunagar district. She had asked for a 30 days ordinary leave.

The Tamil Nadu government had rejected his 30 days ordinary leave application earlier due to local body elections in the State. Since the local body elections were completed, the judges granted a 15 days leave to Ravichandran.

The convict had been earlier granted ordinary leave five times since 2001 and on all occasions the convict had surrendered before prison authorities without causing any inconvenience.

The convict has been asked by the court to surrender before the prison authorities after the completion of 15 days ordinary leave. The case has been posted to January 28 for reporting compliance.
