Fill vacancies, lower pendency, improve infrastructure: Bar association chiefs’ hopes from Justice Chandrachud as next CJI

The ascension of Justice DY Chandrachud as the 50th Chief Justice of India has been welcomed and hailed by many. Here are bar association chiefs putting forth their expectations from Justice Chandrachud as the CJI.

Nitin Thakker, President, Bombay Bar Association: I believe the tenure of the new Chief Justice of India will be two years, which is enough for him to achieve new goals. It is known to everyone that it takes time to resolve cases. I believe the reason behind this is late appointments in the courts and vacancies are increasing. I hope the new CJI will work hand in glove with the Government to fill up the vacancies hence increasing the efficiency of courts and increasing the disposal of cases.

JE Coelho Periera, President, Goa Bar Association: Let me at the outset wish Justice DY Chandrachud all the best for his new pivotal position in the judiciary. Justice DY Chandrachud is dear to Goa because when he started his practice we had the occasion to interact with him. We had the privilege of hearing him argue cases also in Goa.

Praveen Chaudhary , President, Karkardooma Bar Association: Iwould like to express my best wishes to Justice DY Chandrachud for becoming the Chief Justice of India. All the district court bars in Delhi are hopeful that the CJI will intervene in the matter of appointments being done by NLSA and DLSA, even of paid lawyers, which are making the profession difficult for private lawyers. So a solution can come to the fore for all lawyers.

Indrajeet Singh Saroha, President, Rohini Court Bar Association: Justice DY Chandrachud will prove to be the best CJI for the lawyers and judicial system in his two-year term. He will prove to be the best Chief Justice in India. CJI DY Chandrachud is tech savvy.  He will bring huge reforms in the use of technology in the Indian judicial system. Justice delivery system is bound to improve in his tenure.

Dheerendra Nath Sharma, President, Banaras Bar Association:  I urge the CJI to resolve the basic problems cropping in courts of entire Purvanchal.

Rajendra Krishnan, President, Ranchi Bar Association: Infrastructure of courts, civil courts and of bar is very poor. Combining the Central and state funds, thousands of crores are available for the restoration of courts but to no avail. We expect a lot from CJI Chandrachud that he will take all initiatives to provide good infrastructure in civil court, council as well as for the bar. He should make the Collegium System more effective so that meritorious lawyers, civil judges can move to high courts and Supreme Court.

Bhuvnesh Sharma, President, HC Bar Association: Citizens have expectations from CJI DY Chandrachud as he will serve for a long term. I too expect that he will address and resolve the problems of bar associations as he himself must have been a member of some bar association. Secondly, there should be a resolution of the pending cases in India.

Ashish Soni, President, Raipur Bar Association: CJI Justice DY Chandrachud will set a new dimension by also doing other reformative work as per the guidelines.

Rakesh Chaudhary, President, Awadh Bar Association: I congratulateJustice DY Chandrachud for becoming the new Chief Justice of India. Since, he has served in Lucknow and was Chief Justice of the High Court of Allahabad for more than two years, he has a connection with advocates in UP.  He is a worthy son of a worthy father.

Manmohan Kandwal, President, Dehradun Bar Association: I congratulate Justice DY Chandrachud both from myself and from the whole community of advocates in Dehradun.

Anil Sharma, Secretary, Dehradun Bar Association: I believe he will bridge the gap between the advocates and judiciary system. The biggest problems arising in the district courts are the behaviour of judges with advocates is very poor. I want such a system in which High Courts can monitor the work of district court judges and their behaviour can be improved.
