Centre notifies transfers of two HC Justices, appoints 3 Additional Judges to Calcutta HC

The Centre has notified the transfers of Allahabad High Court Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari and Rajasthan High Court Justice Satish Kumar Sharma to the Madras High Court and the Madhya Pradesh High Court respectively. The Centre also notified the appointment of three additional judges of the Calcutta High Court.

By two notifications dated November 16, 2021, the Government of India said:

“After consultation with the Chief Justice of India Justice N.V. Ramana has transferred Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari, Judge, Allahabad High Court as Judge of Madras High Court and Justice Satish Kumar Sharma, Judge of the Rajasthan High Court as Judge of Madhya Pradesh High Court.”

According to the notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice, appointments division on November 16, 2021, “In exercise of power conferred by clause (1) of Article 224 of the Constitution of India, President Ram Nath Kovind is pleased to appoint Krishna Rao, Bibhas Ranjan De and Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee in that order of seniority for a period of two years with effect from the date they assume charge of their respective offices.”

Meanwhile, outgoing Madras High Court Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee has put out a letter thanking the bench, the bar and the court staff for all their help during his tenure in the Tamil Nadu capital. The Centre had notified his transfer to the Meghalaya High Court on November 9. Many lawyers in Chennai had expressed outrage and questioned the transfer and claimed it to be a case of punitive transfer.
