The Supreme Court on Monday (Aug 14) refused to take suo motu cognizance of the incident in which more than 60 children had died in a Gorakhpur medical college. It also did not agree to form a SIT to probe the matter. The petitioner Lawyer Rajeshwari Reddy had approached the top court requesting it to take suo motu cognizance of the matter.

The Chief Justice of India JS Khehar said that the UP chief minister was taking personal interest in the matter and the court was aware that he had visited the medical college hospital where the children died allegedly due to lack of oxygen supply.

He also pointed out that the matter was under the state’s jurisdiction, and the petitioner could approach the high court for action.
