Expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar sentenced to life in Unnao rape case

Expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar has been sentenced to life in jail. Delhi’s Tis Hazari Court District and Session Judge Dharmesh Sharma sentenced former BJP MLA Sengar to life for offence under Section 376 IPC and Section 5(c) & 6 of the POCSO Act.

Court has also directed Sengar to pay a compensation of 25 lakh rupees to the survivor and 15 lakh rupees as costs, to the prosecution.

The investigating agency in the case, CBI, had urged the court for giving stringent punishment to the accused earlier in the day.

Kuldeep Singh Sengar was convicted of kidnapping and raping a young girl from Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao two years ago. The survivor was a minor then.

The Tis Hazari Court in Delhi on Monday had convicted him under section 376 of the Indian Penal Code and sections 5(c) and 6 of Protection of Child from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO).

Sengar, a four-time MLA from UP’s Bangermau, was expelled from the BJP in August 2019.

Another accused, Shashi Singh, however, was acquitted of all charges.

The court pulled up the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) over delay in filing the charge-sheet saying it prolonged trial against Sengar.

“Sengar was a powerful person and the victim was a village girl, not from a cosmopolitan educated area which led to delay in filing the case,” the court had said.
