Former Chief Justice of India AM Ahmadi passes away

Former Chief Justice of India, Justice AM Ahmadi, passed away on Thursday morning at around 5 am.

Aziz Mushabber Ahmadi was born on March 25, 1932 in Surat. After receiving the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), Ahmadi joined the Bar in 1954.

He was eventually appointed as judge to the City Civil and Sessions Court of Ahmedabad in 1964. During this time, Ahmadi was appointed as Secretary of the Legal Affairs in the State of Gujarat in 1974, which soon led to his appointment as Judge of the Gujarat High Court in 1976.

 After serving as judge in the Gujarat High Court, Ahmadi was appointed judge to the Supreme Court in 1988.

He was then elevated to the post of Chief Justice, and served from 1994 to 1997. He served as Chancellor at the Aligarh Muslim University for two terms.

Justice Ahmadi was the son of a junior civil judge and spent a large part of his early years living in various districts and talukas. 

Some of the notable judgments of which he was a part include Indra Sawhney v. Union of India and Ismail Faruqui v. Union of India.
