Justice Banumathi faints in SC during hearing in 2012 Nirbhaya case

Supreme Court judge R. Banumathi on Friday fainted in the court during a hearing in the Nirbhaya case.

A bench of Justices R Banumathi, Ashok Bhushan and AS Bopanna was hearing the Centre’s plea for separate execution of the four convicts in 2012 gang-rape and murder Nirbhaya case.

However, soon she gained consciousness soon. She was taken to the chamber by the other judges and the court staff where Solicitor General Tushar Mehta called the medical help. The doctors after monitoring her health condition said that she had a high fever since morning and was on medication.

The bench adjourning the plea said the matter will be listed again on February 20 at 2 pm. Justice Bopanna said the order will be released later in-chamber.

The Supreme Court on Thursday adjourned for tomorrow the hearing of the Centre’s plea for separate execution of the four Nirbhaya case condemned prisoners even as it appointed lawyer Anjana Prakash as amicus curiae for convict Pawan Gupta.

The bench also asked the convicts to file their response by tomorrow on the petition.

The name of Prakash, a former judge of the Patna High Court, was suggested by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to represent Gupta.
