Justice Surinder Singh Nijjar passes away

Born on June 7, 1949, Justice Nijjar was educated in England from the age of 12 years. He obtained LLB Degree from the University of London in 1972 .

ILNS: Former Supreme Court judge Justice Surinder Singh Nijjar passed away on Friday due to a cardiac arrest. He was 71.

Justice Nijjar was appointed to the Supreme Court on November 17, 2009 and retired on June 6, 2014. He also served as the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court and as Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and the Bombay High Court.

Born on June 7, 1949, Justice Nijjar was educated in England from the age of 12 years. He obtained LLB Degree from the University of London in 1972 and did Bar-at-Law from Middle Temple Inn, London in 1975. He practised Law in England from 1975 to 1977.

Justice Nijjar was enrolled as an Advocate of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on April 28, 1977. The Government of Punjab appointed him as an Additional Advocate General on October 13, 1995. He was elevated to the Bench of High Court of Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh, as an Additional Judge on April 8, 1996 and was transferred as an Additional Judge of the High Court at Bombay on April 26, 1996.

Justice Nijjar assumed charge as Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court on March 7, 2007. He was elevated as a Judge to the Supreme Court on November 17, 2009. He was appointed as Chairman, Mediation and Conciliation Project Committee of the Supreme Court in 2012.
