Justice Lalit inaugurates mega legal services camp at Kanyakumari, says pandemic lifted lawyers spirits to render more and better services

The welcome address for the ceremony was rendered by Rajashekar, the member-secretary, Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority while S. Arul Murugan, Principal District Judge, Kanyakumari District delivered vote of thanks.

As part of the ongoing pan India campaign, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit inaugurated a mega legal services camp at Kanyakumari, which was hosted by the Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority in association with the local District Administration.

The inauguration commenced with Justice Lalit flagging off 5 mobile vans, which would travel through various parts of Tamil Nadu and would spread awareness about legal services that are made available to common people by the legal services institutions.

Speaking at the occasion, Justice Lalit said that the pandemic has not dampened the spirits of the legal services institutions and that the pandemic has rather lifted our spirits to render more and better services.

As a result of the pandemic, there are large numbers of victims, who have actually faced the brunt of the situation. However, the Legal Services Institutions have a large number of committed para-legal volunteers, when it comes to extending legal aid. People don’t know about its existence. Hence, spreading legal awareness becomes a critical part of rendering legal services. It is only with this intent that the NALSA mooted the idea of the pan-India Legal Awareness Campaign.

Earlier during the ceremony, justice UU Lalit awarded the copy of collector’s sanction order for earmarking a piece of land as a burial site to a group of transgender, who had already petitioned the legal services authority during the pan India campaign seeking the establishment of the burial site in their locality.

During the camp, 26 children orphaned during the pandemic were Rs. 3 lakh each. The disability certificates were distributed to more than 50 differently-abled persons. Five motorised vehicles designed for the use of differently-abled persons were also handed over to beneficiaries. Thirty crop insurance benefits were also given and the widow of a fisherman, who lost his life in high sea received 3 lakhs.

The department distributed more than 25 iron boxes to beneficiaries and another 14 departments have also distributed 75 various kinds of benefits relating to their departments.

As of 12 noon, 187 benefits have distributed by various departments. More than 600 persons from various vulnerable communities have participated and awareness has been created among them about existence of government welfare schemes and legal aid

Adi Dravida Welfare Department distributed more than 25 iron boxes to the beneficiaries. Another 14 departments have also distributed 75 various kinds of benefits relating to their departments. As of 12 noon, 187 benefits have been distributed by various departments. More than 600 persons from various vulnerable communities have participated and awareness has been created among them about the existence of government welfare schemes and legal aid.

The inaugural ceremony was also attended by Justices M. Duraisamy, the Executive Chairman of Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority/Judge, Madras High Court, T. Raja, Chairman, Madras High Court Legal Services Committee.

In his speech, Justice M. Duraisamy spoke about the successful implementation of the pan India campaign in the state of Tamil Nadu. The judge also highlighted the need for such a campaign in the aftermath of the pandemic crisis.

Justice T. Raja said that the common people were deprived of their livelihood during this pandemic. This pan-India campaign has helped a lot for them to regain normalcy.
