Delhi CM asked to appear on July 29 in a suit filed by media baron Subhash Chandra

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, while having to defend the defamation case filed by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the Delhi High Court, will also have to defend himself against a defamation suit filed by Rajya Sabha MP Subhash Chandra, who also owns the Essel Group, of the Zee Network fame.

Kejriwal has been summoned to the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Snigdha Sarvaria on July 29. The magistrate said on March 6: “Clearly there is sufficient material on record to summon accused Arvind Kejriwal for the offence punishable under Section 500 (defamation) of Indian Penal Code.”

In the wake of demonetization, Kejriwal had made statements that Chandra had taken offence to. The media baron approached the court on November 17, saying that Kejriwal had made defamatory statements against him and his organization during a press conference on November 11 last year.

As per the complaint, Kejriwal allegedly “defamed the complainant (Chandra) by making inherently defamatory statements and caused serious harm to his reputation by imputing behaviour incompatible with proper conduct and suggestions of involvement in illegal activity.”
