Central Government constitutes Law Commission after 4 years with Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi as Chairperson

A Law commission has been constituted by the Central Government after a gap of four years with the former Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi appointed as its chairperson.

The other important members of the law Commission include the Former Kerala High Court judge Justice KT Sankaran, Prof. Anand Paliwal, Prof. DP Verma, Prof.(Dr) Raka Arya and Shri M Karunanithi.

Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi was the judge who headed the Karnataka High Court bench which delivered the hijab verdict.

Chief Justice Awasthi was born on July 3, 1960,he did his graduation in law from the University of Lucknow in 1986. He was enrolled as an advocate on February 1, 1987.

Justice Ritu Raj started his practise at the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High where he looked into civil, service and educational litigation.

He was appointed as an Assistant Solicitor General of India before his elevation as a Judge.

He became the Additional Judge of the Allahabad High Court on April 13, 2009. On December 24, 2010 he took oath as a permanent judge on December 24, 2010. He was appointed as Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court on October 11, 2021.

Justice Rituraj demitted office on July 2 this year.

The last Law Commission was under the chairmanship of Justice BS Chauhan who headed the 21st Law Commission. He retired in the year 2018, since then the position laid vacant.
