Lawyer requests Delhi civic bodies to shut slaughterhouses, meat shops on Mahavir Jayanti, April 25

This year the day is going to be celebrated on April 25 and since the first preaching is non-violence, it would be in the fitness of things that slaughterhouses/ meat shops are not allowed to open on the said day.

A Delhi-based lawyer on Thursday has requested the Commissioners of the North, South and East Municipal Corporations and the New Delhi Municipal Council for the closure of slaughterhouses/meat shops on the auspicious occasion of Mahavir Janm-Kalyanak (Mahavir Jayanti) which falls on April 25, Sunday.

Advocate Atul Jain said in his letter that Lord Mahavir has given five main updeshas for the world. Among these five points, “Ahimsa ParmoDharma” which translates to “non-violence” is the first religion.

This year the day is going to be celebrated on April 25 and since the first preaching is non-violence, it would be in the fitness of things that slaughterhouses/ meat shops are not allowed to open on the said day.

Jains believe in not killing or hurting even a small insect, therefore, the killing of animals in slaughterhouses and meat shops on the auspicious occasion shall hurt the religious feelings of the community. The sort of belief should at least be respected for the very day, if not for all times.

Advocate Jain inscribed about the concerned authorities and their respective powers under Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957 and New Delhi Municipal Council Act, 1994 to close any municipal market, slaughter house or any part thereof.

Jain quoted two Supreme Court cases viz. “Municipal Corporation of City of Ahmedabad & Ors. vs. Jan Mohammed Usman bhai & Anr” wherein the Hon’ble court ordered to close the slaughterhouses in the city of Ahmedabad closed for 7 consecutive days including “Mahavir Jayanti” and “Hinsa Virodhak Sangh vs. Mirzapur Moti Quresh Jamat and Ors.” wherein the Hon’ble court ordered that the slaughterhouses and meat shops to be closed during the period of “Paryushan Parv” (Jain Festival) which is celebrated for 9 days.

The Jain community forms an integral part of society and a large population resides in the capital. In view of the aforesaid judgments, Atul Jain has made the request and has also sent a copy to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
