More areas in India are now exempt from the Supreme Court’s ban on the sale of liquor within 500m of national and state highways. On Friday (August 4), the bench of Chief Justice JS Khehar and Justice DY Chandrachud heard a prayer and decided that more areas in Uttarakhand will be exempt from the ban.

Exemption was extended to most areas of the district of Nainital, including Tarkash, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Todi Chittoragarh, Bageshwar and Almora.

The bench said that in so far as the district of Nainital is concerned the exemption deserves to be extended to four tehsils, namely Nainital, Dhari, Vettelkah and Koshali.

With respect to Dehradun, said the bench, the exemption deserves to be extended to Chakarata Kalsi and Puni.

However, it was clarified that these concessions are not for Haridwar.

All these districts are exempted for the 500 m ban, like in Sikkim.
