PM Modi calls on world leaders at 14th COP to Ban Single-Use Plastic

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on world leaders at the 14th Conference of Parties (COP14) to United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) being organized in India Expo Mart, Greater Noida to ban single-use plastic in their countries. India has imposed ban on six single-use plastic items – plastic bags, cups, plates, small bottles, straws and certain types of sachets, effective from 2nd October 2019.

“When we address degraded lands, we also address water scarcity. Augmenting water supply, enhancing water recharge, slowing down water run-off and retaining moisture in the soil are all parts of a holistic land and water strategy,” PM Modi said, in the presence of UNCCD executive secretary Ibrahaim Thiaw and other eminent leaders.

Plastic, if discarded in water kills marine life and enters the human food chain and if discarded on land, cuts off the ordinary water movement, thus causing desertification.

The Foundation for Campaign Against Plastic Pollution (F-CAPP) applauded the Prime Minister’s speech in the wake of this environment crisis caused by plastic. F-CAPP is working at the grass root level in Delhi-NCR has been generating awareness through road shows and other such initiatives since early this year. It is spearheading a public movement on a wide scale while collaborating with Market Associations, Residents Welfare Associations (RWAs) and Educational Institutions in the National Capital Region (NCR) to organise public events to reduce the plastic footprint in the society. The dedicated team of F-CAPP comprising Founder President Shri Anoop Kumar Srivastava, Delhi Government Standing Counsel Advocate Naushad Ahmed Khan, Shri Shrikant Kumar Ambastha, Smt. Uma Srivastava, Smt. Mahima Ambastha, and Shri Ravinder Nath Sharma have reached the masses, knocking at the doors of houses, shops and food outlets to take an oath for boycotting single-use plastic.
