No offence found against former Madras HC Chief Justice Tahilramani : CBI to Parliament

The Union Minister, Jitendra Singh from the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pension told the Parliament that in the case of the former Madras High Court Chief Justice VK Tahilramani no act of cognisance was found by the Central Bureau of Investigation which was finding details about the allegations of impropriety and corruption against her.

During the question hour in Lok Sabha, the Member of Parliament DMK MP AKP Chinraj questioned if CBI received any direction from July 2019 to November 2019 from Supreme Court or Chief Justice of India to take action against a former Chief Justice of Madras High Court from July 2019 to November 2019.

The MP also questioned if there was any FIR registered by CBI in this regard.

To which the minister replied that a reference was indeed received but, on verification, the CBI found that there was no commission of a cognizable offence and therefore, no FIR was registered

In the year 2019, the former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi instructed the CBI for taking action in a report filed by the Intelligence Bureau (IB) which reported that the judges involvement in the decision to dissolve a special High Court bench which was dealing with idol theft cases that involved influential politicians, and her alleged close ties with a Tamil Nadu Minister.

Later on the Justice was transferred to Meghalaya High Court as Chief Justice from the court she was working with.

The Judge tendered her resignation as a protest against the decision by Apex Court collegium to transfer her.

Although the routine transfers are apart of the system but the decision to remove Justice Tahilramani from the senior-most post at one of the largest High Court and send her instead to the smallest High Court, at a time when she enjoyed seniority among all high court judges, caused a huge uproar.
