Opposition MPs boycott Rajya Sabha, Dy Chairman goes on 24-hr fast for the ‘humiliation’

New Delhi: The chaos in Parliament has not abated. Today Opposition MPs have all said that they will boycott Rajya Sabha proceedings till the suspension order on eight Rajya Sabha MPs is revoked.

Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh has written to the chairman, saying he was “humiliated” and because of that he would be going on a 24-hour fast. He expressed his anguish at the conduct of the MPs on Sunday.

The chaos ensued while the ruling party was trying to push through Farm Bils amendments. The MPs are on indefinite protest.

Meanwhile, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi has sounded a somewhat conciliatory note, saying what happened was “painful”, but

“the government is not bent upon to run the business without them. We are ready to hold a discussion as we’re on a strong footing.”

Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha today passed the Indian Institutes of Information Technology Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2020, which has the power to declare 5 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) in Surat, Bhopal, Bhagalpur, Agartala, and Raichur, as institutions of national importance, allowing them to award degrees and diplomas. Currently they do not have this power.

The IIITs were results of public-private partnerships and were registered as Societies under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.
