Bombay High Court issues notice to Maharashtra government on Sarus crane habitat depletion

The Bombay High Court has recently issued notice to the Ministry of Climate Change, Government of Maharashtra in a Suo Motu PIL concerning threat to the habitat of the Sarus Crane.

The Division Bench of Justice Sunil B. Shukre and Justice Anil S. Kilor has heard a Suo Motu PIL raising the issue  of fundamental importance to the environment and forest of not only Vidarbha Region but the whole of India for the reason that the habitat of the Sarus Crane is under threat which has resulted in the dwindling of population of this bird and further pushing the bird towards extinction.

“Suffice it to say that as the issue is important from the view point of forest and environment not only in Vidarbha Region but the whole of India, and a threat to the habitat of Sarus Crane birds, notice is required to be issued,”

-the order reads.

On July 5 , the Court observed that a proper petition is required to be filed and therefore appointed Radhika Bajaj as Amicus Curiae to assist the Court. The Maharashtra State Biodiversity Board, Pune, was added as a party in the petition.
