SC grants time to ASG to find Manipur death details

Parents of youth killed in road rage by Manipur CM’s son ask for central security

The Supreme Court on May 29 gave Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Maninder Singh a week’s time to find out whether a complaint by Irom Chitra Devi of Manipur, regarding threat to her life by Ajay Meetei, son of the current chief minister of Manipur N Biren Singh, has any substance.

In the last hearing on May 22, the apex court bench of Justices AK Sikri and Deepak Gupta had issued notice to Union of India and the Manipur government on the petition filed by Chitra Devi, the parent of the victim who was allegedly killed in a road rage in 2011 by Meetei. The parents of the youth allege that they fear for their lives in Manipur.

The Centre and the state of Manipur were to respond to the apex court’s notice by May 29.

On May 29, the counsel for the petitioner submitted that there is a serious threat of life to the parents. The parents have claimed that no lawyer had agreed to take up their case.

The counsel for Manipur submitted that they are ready to provide protection, but the petitioner said they want central security not the state’s security.

At this the ASG said that they need some time to respond. They want to investigate whether the allegations are true or not. At this the bench remarked that no one would be making such allegations without there being any truth in that.

Singh then got time till Monday to come back with instructions.
