Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana ,who would finally be putting the gavel down this year said that he will not retire from public life even after he retires from the prestigious judicial service later this year.
The CJI believes that retirement age is a mere number, he still has energy in him to continue. CJI also believes that retirement at the age of 65 years for Supreme Court judges ought to be reconsidered seriously.
“I think 65 years is too early for someone to retire! I worked almost 22 years as a High Court judge, Supreme Court judge and CJI…we know our date of retirement at the time of joining. There are no exceptions. I am still left with decent amount of energy. I love to be among the people. It has been my nature since student days. One thing I can say for certain is that retirement from the judiciary does not mean that I will retire from public life”

The CJI spoke about his views on retirement at the second Comparative Constitutional Law Conversation webinar on Comparative Approaches of Supreme Courts of World’s Largest and Oldest Democracies. The event had United States Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer as the other speaker.

The Chief Justice Ramana was born agriculturist parents in Ponnavaram village, situated in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh.on 27th August, 1957 and will superannuate this August 26
CJI Ramana was enrolled as an advocate in February 1983 and has practiced in several courts including Supreme Court,Andhra Pradesh High court and many tribunals.He has also been Additional Standing Counsel for the Central government and Standing Counsel for the Railways in the Central Administrative Tribunal at Hyderabad. Adding another feather to his cape was serving as Additional Advocate General for Andhra Pradesh.
Justice Ramana was appointed as a permanent judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on June 27, 2000. On September 2013 he took the charge of the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court on and was soon elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court on February 17, 2014.
He took the final mantle on April 24, 2021, when he took the charge of Chief Justice of India.
