Supreme Court Bar Association cancels Holi celebrations in wake of Delhi violence

The Supreme Court bar association on Tuesday announced that it would not celebrate Holi this year in the wake of Delhi riots which claimed 47 lives and left over 200 injured.

“Having seen the sufferings in North-east areas of the national capital we decided to cancel the Holi Milan scheduled for 6th March 2020,” the Bar Association said in a notification.

Violence ravaged northeast Delhi for three days since February 23 and continued till February 25 night. The violence broke out when protesters set ablaze vehicles and houses in some localities like Jafrabad, Maujpur and Yamuna Vihar.

Multiple killings were reported from the affected areas. Delhi Police constable Ratan Lal, IB official Ankit Sharma were also among the dead.

According to the police, 369 FIRs have been registered and 1,284 persons have been arrested or detained so far in connection with the northeast Delhi violence. Forty-one of the cases were registered under the Arms Act.

However, the situation in the riot-affected areas is under control, a senior police official said.
