The Secretary of University Grants Commission (UGC) has written a letter to the Vice Chancellors of all Universities and the Principals of all the Colleges with respect to the mental health & well-being of students during and after COVID-19 outbreak.

The letter says that UGC has been issuing regular advisories requesting Higher Education Institutions (HEI) to take all possible preventive and precautionary measures to ensure the safety and security of students, whether on campus in hostels or outside, amid the outbreak of COVID-19. During the period of national lockdown, it is equally important to address any kind of mental health and psychological concerns of the student community and during and after the pandemic.

In order to avoid any kind of stress or panic in the prevailing situation the Commission has asked the Universities and Colleges to set up help lines for mental health, psychological concerns and well-being of students in universities / colleges and also the Commission stressed upon regular monitoring of students through interactions and appeals / letters by the Universities/ College to remain calm and stress free.

It emphasized upon forming COVID-19 help groups of students in Universities /colleges, headed by hostel wardens/ senior faculty who can identify friends/ classmates in need of help and provide immediate necessary help. Thereafter, the UGC had asked to the Vice Chancellors of all Universities and Principals of all Colleges to share the video links of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare with the students on College / Universities website about “Practical tips to take care of your Mental Health during the Stay In” & “Minding our minds during COVID-19”.
