SC hints at own committee, headed by retired SC judge, to investigate Vikas Dubey killing

The Supreme Court said today (July 14) that it was thinking of forming a committee as was done in the case of the Hyderabad encounter case last year, to probe the alleged encounter killing of gangster Vikas Dubey and his five associates by Uttar Pradesh Police.

The bench, comprising Chief Justice SA Bobde and Justices R Subhash Reddy and AS Bopanna, was hearing a plea filed by Advocate Ghanshyam Upadhyay, seeking investigation into the alleged encounter of four accused who, along with co-accused Vikas Dubey, were alleged to be involved in killing of eight policemen in district Kanpur on July 2.

The petitioner has further sought a CBI investigation under the supervision of the Supreme Court with a prayer for strict action against policemen and all those who are involved in the killing of the said four accused.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, while seeking time to file a reply, informed the court that the state government has already taken cognizance of the matter. The bench has sought response from the state government by Thursday while listing the matter for next hearing on July 20.
