SC rejects Sajjan Kumar’s interim bail plea

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today dismissed an application by former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, who had sought interim bail on health grounds. Kumar is serving a life sentence in the anti-Sikh riots case. A bench of Chief Justice SA Bobde and Justices AS Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian declined to provide any interim relief.

Senior Advocate Vikas Singh, appearing for Kumar, said his client’s health was deteriorating and due to this he has lost weight as well.

“He has been in jail for 20 months and has lost nearly 16 kg and needs to recover from past ailments,” Singh argued.

Senior Advocate HS Phoolka vehemently opposed the bail plea and submitted that treatment is being given to Kumar at the hospital whenever required.

The Delhi High Court had convicted Kumar in 2018. The high court had reversed the acquittal of Kumar by the trial court in 2013 in the case related to the killings of five Sikhs in the Raj Nagar Part-I area in Palam Colony in southwest Delhi on November 1-2, 1984, and burning down of a gurdwara in Raj Nagar Part-II.

The riots had broken out after the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984 by her two Sikh bodyguards.
