The Government of India has decided to open up Covid-19 vaccination for all above the age of 18 from May 1 in view of a gigantic increase in the incidence of fresh infections in the second wave

The direction to file affidavit was passed during the hearing of a suo motu petition started by the Delhi High Court on its own motion to include judicial staff, advocates & judges as frontline workers.

Even as many nations are battling the deadly pandemic, India, a world leader in health, has lent a helping hand by exporting vaccines to them. This diplomatic move could also help in medical tourism.

As the centre gears up to vaccinate Indians for Covid-19, it has to keep in mind a number of parameters and give it to those who need it the most. India’s cases are among the lowest and the drive could see it on top of the game.

Finding a vaccine suited to India is the least of the problems the government will face. Storing and transporting them at a certain temperature range can be a logistical nightmare, but India is adept at this.

While framing the rules, the government has to keep in mind that health is a fundamental human right, which has as its prerequisites social justice and equality. It should be accessible to all. Legal provisions are in place.

Though the ICMR is aiming for an August 15 deadline, it is a moot question whether a timeline can be issued when different phases and trials have to be done to ensure safety.
