In a major setback for the Mamata Banerjee government, the five-judge Supreme Court bench of Acting Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal and Justices IP Mukerji, Harish Tandon, Soumen Sen and Subrata Talukdar on Thursday ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the alleged cases of murder and crimes against women during the violence that followed the elections in West Bengal.

A Supreme Court bench heard the counsel for the State of Maharashtra Rahul Chitnis and dismissed the plea filed by State of Maharashtra seeking removal of certain paragraphs from the FIR registered by CBI against Ex Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on charges of bribery, corruption & criminal conspiracy.

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday observed that the CBI should be an autonomous body like the Election Commission of India.

The Delhi High Court today issued notice to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on a petition challenging Section 44(1) (c) (Offences triable by Special Courts) of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

The Supreme Court division bench after hearing the Sr Advocate Prashant Bhushan and Tushar Mehta ordered the petitioner to issue a public notice in at least two local newspaper returnable on 18 August.

A three judges Supreme Court bench headed by Justice U U Lalit while hearing the petition have issued notice to Central Bureau of Investigation, State of Karnataka and asked to file an affidavit within 7 days.

Luthra also referred to the West Bengal State amendment to Section 167 CrPC. He said that West Bengal is only State which allowed production of accused through video audio conference even before the Covid era. Luthra referred to 2(g).

Senior Advocate Siddharth Luthra appearing for the State of West Bengal apprised the court that the FIR registered in this case and three people have been arrested on the basis of these complaints.
