Supreme Court has been approached by a law student seeking initiation of proceedings for criminal contempt against comic artist Rachita Taneja for her tweets concerning the top Court.

In response to a letter written by law student Aditya Kashyap, Attorney General KK Venugopal has granted his consent to initiate contempt of court proceedings against comic artist Rachita Taneja, for a cartoon uploaded on her Twitter handle that depicted the Bharatiya Janata Party.....

New Delhi (ILNS): Attorney General KK Venugopal today gave his nod to initiate criminal contempt of court proceedings against stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra for his tweets against the Supreme Court of India.

In response to Upadhyay's letter requesting reconsideration, Venugopal reiterated his stand that the issue of contempt is a matter between Chief Justice of India (CJI) SA Bobde and Andhra CM YS Jaganmohan Reddy and his principal advisor.

Though the AG denied consent to initiate contempt proceedings, he condemned the act as “prima facie contumacious”.

Attorney General K K Venugopal told the bench of Justices A. M. Khanwilkar, Dinesh Maheshwari and Sanjiv Khanna that there is need to educate judges on gender sensitization.

The Supreme Court today adjourned till the first week of November, a 2009 contempt case against Senior Advocate Prashant Bhushan and Tarun Tejpal for allegedly casting aspersions on some sitting and former top court judges in an interview to the news magazine Tehelka.
