The Meghalaya High Court on Tuesday hoped the State’s obligation to maintain the road, immediate repair work is commenced to ensure that the needless waste of fuel and additional emission is avoided while hearing a PIL.

The PIL has been filed by one Kerlang Ksoo complaining of the deplorable condition of the Shillong-Jowai Road. According to the petitioner,  though it is a National Highway and a part of NH-6, the responsibility for maintaining the road is of the State.

The Division Bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice W. Diengdoh issued notice to the respondents including the state government of Meghalaya and the National Highways Authority of India.

“Let the matter appear a fortnight hence. It is hoped that to the extent it is the State’s obligation to maintain the road, immediate repair work is commenced to ensure that the needless waste of fuel and additional emission are avoided,”

-the order reads.

The High Court has listed the matter on December 15 for further hearing.
