Taking suo motu cognisan...

Prisoners granted bail will no longer have to wait for a physical copy of the order to reach jails for their release. Various courts have slammed the earlier system whereby a prisoner had to wait for the bail order sent by post to reach prison authorities.

The Supreme Court was hearing an appeal filed by District Bar Association, Dehradun against the judgment of the Uttarakhand High Court holding strikes/ boycott of courts by advocates to be illegal.

In initial discussions, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the Chief Justice that Delhi and some other courts have taken suo motu cognisance, but there is a person, Mr Malhotra, who made an application regarding the suo motu case.

Bombay HC has taken suo motu cognisance of a building collapse in Bhiwandi town of Maharashtra’s Thane district and initiated a public interest litigation (PIL), seeking reply from all the seven municipal corporations in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), including BMC, and the state government.
