New Delhi (ILNS): A Public Interest Litigation has been filed in the Delhi High Court seeking directions to the central government to ensure that the digitalized financial services are accessible to the visually challenged person.

The PIL has been filed by George Abraham seeking accessibility along with training for all the employees and customer care service providers of all banks in connection with the need of the visually challenged person.

The plea filed through Advocate Srishti Agnihotri stated that the touch-screen display, websites, and phones are not accessible for the visually challenged. Whereas, the visually challenged are considered legally competent to enter into a contract and have the right to handle their financial affairs.

The petition stated the

“Digitalisation of banking and financial services that makes visually challenged/ impaired persons dependent on sighted persons is in violation of their right to life with dignity under Article 21 of the Constitution as well as their right to occupation under Article 19(1)(g).”

The plea further added that there are however several more impediments that require immediate attention and action on part of the authorities.
